Khartoum: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud yesterday represented Qatar at the inauguration of Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed Al Bashir for a new five-year term.
The inauguration and swearing-in ceremony was held in the city of Omdurman.
A large number of heads of state and governments, parliamentarians and representatives of states, and regional and international organisations, among others, were present.
Al Mahmoud conveyed greetings of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to his brother Al Bashir and his best wishes to relations between both countries further progress for the benefit of the two brotherly peoples.
Al Bashir entrusted Al Mahmoud to convey his thanks and greetings to the Emir for Qatar’s participation.
He also asked Al Mahmoud to convey his wishes of best health and happiness to the Emir and to relations between both countries further development.
Advisory Council Deputy Speaker Issa bin Rabia Al Kuwari and Qatari Ambassador to Sudan Rashid bin Abdulrahman Al Nuaimi also attended the event.
Al Kuwari also took part in the opening of the new parliamentary session of the National Council.
Al Bashir assumed power on June 30, 1989 and won last April’s elections with 94.5 percent of votes.
Al Mahmoud also met Chad’s President Idriss Deby on the sidelines of the ceremony and reviewed ties between both countries and ways of developing them, the peace process in Darfur, steps and successes of Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, and development projects in the region.
He also met Tijani Sissi, Chairman, Darfur Regional Authority, and Head, Liberation and Justice Movement, and Amin Hassan Omer, Head, Darfur Peace Follow-up Office.
The meeting reviewed the peace process and stability in Darfur and successes of Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.
Both sides also discussed development projects carried out in line with Doha Document for Peace in Darfur and those underway.
Al Nuaimi attended the meeting.
Later, Al Mahmoud returned home. He was seen off at Khartoum International Airport by Dr Omer, Al Nuaimi, and other officials. QNA
