The National Human Right Committee (NHRC) yesterday organised a workshop under the theme “ Human rights in police work; in light of international laws and local legislations”. The workshop was organised in cooperation with Police College and Department of Human Rights at the Ministry of Interior and took place at the headquarters of NHRC and hosted members of the police college.
Police personnel as law enforcing individuals under rules and regulations organising their work and respecting human rights are considered by members of the society as their protectors, said Mariam Abdullah Al Attiyah, Secretary-General of NHRC.
The workshop was aimed at raising awareness as part of implementing MoU signed by NHRC and the Police College.
Human rights and basic freedoms have become major issues at all local, regional and international levels and public awareness about these values has significantly improved, said Al Attiyah.
"Human rights all over the world have become common values and principles which must be respected by all," said brigadier Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Mahanna, Director of Police College. The culture of human rights enhances the feeling of dignity and equity among individuals," said Al Mahanna, adding that it also strengthens political participation and citizenship.
The workshop addressed several human rights issues which policemen need to be aware about while doing their duties. The workshop included six work papers discussed in three sessions focused on concepts and principles of human rights.
