Ankara: Turkish authorities revealed today that 5 people died as a result of a mine collapse in the Soma region of Manisa province in western Turkey.

The Manisa Provincial Administration stated that 7 workers were inside the mine at the time of the incident on Thursday, and rescue teams managed to extract two workers from under the rubble shortly after the collapse.

The provincial administration explained that search and rescue teams found the bodies of 3 workers who were under the rubble, shortly after recovering the bodies of two other workers.

Meanwhile, Akin Gorluk, the Turkish Minister of Justice, announced the opening of an investigation into the causes of the incident and assigned three public prosecutors to follow up on the investigation.

It is worth noting that the Soma area witnessed Turkey's deadliest accident in 2014, when 301 miners died from carbon monoxide poisoning following an underground fire caused by an explosion.
