Doha: The Centre for Empowerment and Elderly Care (Ehsan) announced on Wednesday it will be organising a variety of events and activities on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day which is marked on September 21 each year in a bid to raise public awareness of the signs and means to deal with the disease.
The centre, part of the Qatar Social Work Foundation, will hold this year’s celebration under the theme “together we can accomplish a lot”. The events will start with an awareness campaign including lectures and workshops presented by a number of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) physicians and researchers from Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, an affiliate of Hamad bin Khalifa University.
As part of the activities, the centre will honour Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness by lighting up purple- the Alzheimer’s Association’s signature colour.
Also, awareness-raising materials will be distributed to educate the public on the disease, and the patient’s rights in addition to means to deal with the patients and provide spiritual support.
Also included in the campaign will be social media awareness messages in Arabic and English languages to deliver awareness to all society segments.
The centre aims at enhancing awareness among healthcare providers and family members.
The centre’s efforts on this occasion seek to highlight the social aspects of the disease to draw the attention of the state agencies and society members as well as mitigate the disease’s impacts on the families of the patients given the Alzheimer’s across-the-board impacts on physical, psychological and social levels. Director of Ehsan’s Communication and Media Office Jaber Al Araq Al Marri said the centre shares the world in marking Alzheimer’s Day under the slogan of “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s Disease”, focusing on the post-diagnosis support for patients and their families.
