DOHA: The Public Works Authority — Ashghal — has launched a major infrastructure project costing over half billion riyals to develop Al Sailiya, an important city suburb north of Salwa Road.
The area houses the sprawling Barwa Housing Complex, Masaken Sailiya and other residential units, schools, and a number of warehouses and labour accommodations. Despite being highly populated, the area lacks basic amenities such as street lights and proper electricity and drainage networks.
The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has announced plans to set up a new central market in Al Sailiya and several other projects are also on the anvil.
The development project costing over QR573.48m will benefit about 720 housing units and improve the safety of roads surrounding the residential and school area, Ashghal said yesterday. It is expected to be complete by the end of next year.
The project will be implemented in two segments covering an area of 1,460,000 square meters, it said yesterday.
The first segment focuses on north of Salwa Road where the road leads to Masaken Al Sailiya compound, west of the new industrial area intersection. This is in a populated area that lacks proper infrastructure, Ashghal said. The second segment is based north of this area and consists of an empty plot of land that has been allocated for residential buildings.
The project aims to develop the roads and infrastructure of this area, which lacks an adequate sewage system and drainage network.
“This results in the overflow of surface water in the region. The project also aims to build and improve internal roads and provide pedestrian pathways and cycle paths,” said Ashghal.
Major infrastructure works are being implemented as part of the project including the development of the road network, installation of intelligent transport systems and street lights.
The project will also include dedicated pedestrian and cycle paths, sidewalks and parking lots, installation of signage and establishment of drainage network.
The project is part of the Local Roads and Drainage programme projects implemented by Ashghal, which is a nationwide programme that includes the development of roads, drainage and new infrastructure in all areas of Qatar.
The total cost of the project is QR573,482,000 and has been awarded to ‘Qatar Building Company. The Peninsula
