Doha, Qatar: Thousands of sneaker enthusiasts, collectors, content creators, and vendors gathered at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) from May 29 to 31 as Sneaker Con, the largest international buy-sell-trade sneaker event, made its first debut in Qatar.
The three-day event transformed DECC into a space for sneaker culture, offering visitors the chance to buy, sell, trade, customise and authenticate sneakers as they shopped for rare sneakers and streetwear, enjoyed live entertainment, interactive experiences, including basketball activities, and giveaways.
For Sneaker Con Director Jabari Lewis, the event's arrival in Qatar represents a milestone years in the making.
"Sneaker Con is a buy-sell-trade event," Lewis explained. "You can bring your pairs of shoes, sell them, trade with other vendors, or just come and buy sneakers".
What began nearly two decades ago as a small gathering in a basement in New York has grown into an international phenomenon.
"There were only maybe 100 people when we started," Lewis recalled. "Fast forward, we're here in Qatar for the first time, and we never expected to go this far."
He described the Qatar edition as a meaningful opportunity, as it introduces sneaker culture to a new world. "Different countries don't get to experience what we do all the time," he added.
"It is very amazing to see that this has the same feeling as back home. But here it's worth a lot more, because it's so new and fresh".
Among the international vendors attending was Andrew from Heat Archive, an Ohio-based business specializing in luxury and high-end fashion pieces. Having attended countless Sneaker Con events across the United States and internationally, Andrew noticed several differences in the local audience.
"A lot more kids over here, it seems like, compared to the US," he said. "The culture is very strong, a lot of people are buying, and they know their stuff." He was also impressed by the hospitality shown by attendees."Very friendly people, the hospitality is great and very respectful," he added.
The event also attracted well-known personalities from the sneaker community, including authentication expert and social media creator Rome Saint, whose content focuses on identifying counterfeit sneakers."My audience loves to watch me authenticate sneakers and let them know if it's real or fake," she said, explaining how she examines details such as stitching, labels, RFID tags, and packaging.
Saint's journey began with working in sneaker retail before turning her passion into a career. "I worked at Foot Locker, Nike, and Modell's," she said. "Authentication was that challenge for me," and today, Saint has become an online sensation, teaching consumers to avoid scams. "My main objective is making sure people don't get scammed out of their money”.
Comparing audiences abroad to those in the United States, Saint observed a difference in patience."The audience in the US, they're more impatient," she said. "Here, they are willing to wait for the shoe checks and pictures to be done."
Locals were excited to experience this for the first time. Daimon, a Qatar resident attending the event, said his passion for sneakers motivated him to visit. "The quality, the variety, everything just screams at you," he said. "I got to see a lot of things for the first time in real life," highlighting the rare pieces being debuted in Doha for the first time.
He believes the event fills a gap in the regional market, "We've seen videos of Sneaker Con online, and it's amazing to finally experience it in real life.”
The event also created opportunities for local vendors. Sophia and Hamza, independent sneaker sellers from Qatar, arrived intending to trade shoes but ended up creating their own booth. "People told us to just set up here, and we did," they explained. Despite competing against already established international vendors, the pair found success through direct engagement and negotiating with visitors. "People are much more social than we expected," they said. "They're interested in shoes, and we have been able to negotiate and sell a number of pairs of shoes."
As Sneaker Con concluded its first Qatar edition, the event demonstrated the growing niche interests, as well as the unique environment that Doha gives to its guests and residents. From international sneaker veterans to first-time collectors, this event concluded that sneaker culture has found a receptive and special audience in Qatar.
