Doha: Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri has said that the ministry in cooperation with its partners, seeks to complete strategic plans to give further support for the integration of national employment into the labour market, as well as support and care for expatriate workers in the country.

Greeting citizens and expatriates on Labour Day, the Minister lauded their contribution to the development of Qatar.

“Happy International Day of Labour to all Qataris and expatriates. Your commitment is highly appreciated as you are the backbone of the development process in our country,” the minister said in a tweet.

“This year’s celebration coincides with the final preparations for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, where I thank all workers who contributed to this great achievement and pushed the wheel of development.”

Meanwhile, Director of Labor Relations Department at the Ministry of Labor, Abdullah Al Dosari, praised the great role that expatriate workers play in the country's renaissance and sustainable development.

In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the occasion of the International Workers’ Day, which falls on May 1 every year, Al Dosari stressed that the efforts and plans of the Ministry of Labour are continuing in terms of development in mechanisms for protecting workers’ rights.

In this context he reviewed the legislation issued by the ministry to ensure safe work environment for workers and make it more attractive to them, including but not limited to cancelling the requirement of exit permit to exit the country, and cancelling  the requirement of a no-objection certificate from the previous employer (for change of job), the establishment of a workers' support and insurance fund to protect and guarantee their financial rights, promote a safe and healthy work environment, take measures to protect workers from the risks of heat stress, and other distinguished and pioneering steps, including those concerned with occupational health and safety.

He pointed out that many international labour organisations and unions, including the International Labor Organization, have praised Qatar’s development and modernisation of its work environment, especially at the end of the last quarter of last year. He pointed out that the Ministry of Labour takes into account any proposal in this regard.

Al Dosari indicated that the ministry is in continuous communication and coordination with companies and employers, which confirms that protecting workers and preserving their rights is a priority for the Ministry, indicating in a related context that the Workers Support Fund has already paid many dues to workers after a final ruling was issued on them by the labour dispute settlement committees.

He concluded his statement by expressing his appreciation to Qatari citizens working in the private sector for their outstanding contribution to advancing sustainable development in the country, praising once again the role of expatriate workers in this regard.
