Doha, Qatar: The Al Utrujjah Endowment of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs is supporting Quran education for more than 34,000 students across Qatar through sustainable returns generated by its real estate investments, strengthening the financial resources of Quran learning centres and expanding access to religious education.
Managed by the General Directorate of Endowments, the initiative is based on a real estate project comprising 112 apartments, with rental income dedicated to supporting Quran memorisation centres and schools across the country.
Dr. Masoud Jarallah Abusharida, a preacher at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, said Al Utrujjah represents a sustainable model of Quranic endowment that combines investment in charitable assets with directing their returns towards serving the Holy Quran and promoting its teaching.
He explained that the real estate project, inaugurated in 2022, generates monthly revenues that help finance Quran learning centres and ensure the continuity of their educational programmes.
The endowment currently supports 176 Quran centres and schools, where more than 1,500 male and female teachers serve over 34,000 students, he said.
Abusharida noted that the initiative also keeps pace with digital and technological developments by supporting improvements to the learning environment and expanding the capacity of Quran centres to accommodate more students.
He highlighted the growing interest among girls and women in learning the Holy Quran, noting that the endowment helps meet this demand and strengthen women’s connection with the Quran.
The number of female learners has reached 9,131, reflecting the increasing demand for Quran education among women and girls.
He said Quran education plays an important role in raising women’s awareness and strengthening their contributions to family and society, particularly in preserving identity, values and ethical principles amid rapid intellectual, cultural and digital changes and the challenges posed by the internet and social media.
The initiative, he added, helps reinforce the role of women in building families and passing on religious and moral values to future generations.
Abusharida stressed that contributing to the endowment is not limited to wealthy individuals or property owners. The initiative allows people to participate through a contribution of QR1,000 for a lifetime endowment share, while other amounts can also be contributed according to individual financial capacity. He encouraged members of the community to support the initiative and promote awareness of the importance of endowments, noting that collective contributions can broaden community participation in sustaining Quran education.
He explained that real estate endowments combine investment with charitable objectives. Tenants benefit from housing and related services in return for rent, while the proceeds generated by the property are allocated to the charitable purpose specified by the donors in accordance with their conditions.
