Al Rumaihi and Bassil secure mixed trap silver as Cherif, Tijan reach semi-finals

Doha, Qatar: Qatar added another silver medal at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 yesterday as Mohammed Al-Rumaihi and Ray Bassil finished runners-up in the mixed team trap event, while beach volleyball duo Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan reached the semi-finals.

The silver took Team Qatar’s medal tally to 13, comprising three gold, six silver and four bronze, as they continued campaign across several sports.

The Qatari pair hit 32 targets to finish second, behind India’s Kynan Chenai and Neeru, who won gold with 34. China’s Ying Qi and Sun Yunong took bronze with 23 targets.

“The medal was not easily won. The competition was extremely tough. However, by the grace and guidance of God, we were able to achieve this milestone,” Bassil said.

Al-Rumaihi said the medal was the result of hard work and teamwork.

“This is the fourth medal for Qatari shooting at the Games, two golds and two silvers. We aspire to achieve even more medals and accomplishments in future championships and to raise Qatar’s profile high in various arenas,” he said.

Qatari shooters have been the country’s most successful athletes at the Games so far, winning four medals. Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah, Rashid Saleh Al-Athba and Ali Ahmed Al-Ishaq won gold in the men’s team skeet, before Al-Athba added individual skeet gold with a new Asian record. Al-Rumaihi, Saeed Hamad Abu Sharib and Angelo Scalzone then secured silver in the men’s team trap.Mohammed Al-Rumaihi in action.

The shooting competitions conclude today with Mohammed Nasser Al-Yafei competing in the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol event.

Cherif, Tijan eye final

In beach volleyball, Qatar 1’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan advanced to the semi-finals after beating Iran’s Abbas Pouarasgari and Alireza Aghajanighasab 21-13 and 22-20.

The Qatari duo held their nerve in a closely contested first set before taking control in the second to complete the straight-set victory.

Cherif and Tijan, who won gold at the previous Asian Games, will face Thailand’s Paravid Taovato and Pithak Tipjan today for a place in the final.Qatar 1’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan advanced to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s volleyball team will meet hosts Japan today in the quarter-finals after finishing runners-up in Pool C.

Qatar beat Hong Kong and Vietnam before losing 3-2 to India in their final group match.

Qatar pair reaches padel quarters

Qatar’s Rashid Nawaf and Mishari Nawaf advanced to the padel quarter-finals after beating Kuwait’s Abdulaziz Redha and Fouad Behbehani 2-0 in the Round of 16.

The Qatari pair won 6-1, 6-0 and will continue their campaign today facing UAE’s Mashari Naif and Rashed Naif.

“The victory was crucial at the start of our campaign. The match was certainly not easy, but we succeeded in winning and advancing to the next round,” Rashid said.

“A tougher challenge awaits us in the quarter-finals; we must focus fully to deliver the required performance and continue our journey effectively.”

Wrestlers, golfers continue campaign

Qatar’s wrestling campaign continues today with Shaheen Mohammed facing Tajikistan’s Alisher Rozimadov in the Greco-Roman 77kg Round of 16.

Yesterday, Aref Mohammadi defeated Thailand’s Nottapong Hinmee 9-0 in the 67kg Round of 16 before losing to Kyrgyzstan’s Razzak Beishekeev in the quarter-finals.Qatar wreslter Aref Mohammadi in action.

Meanwhile, Qatar golfers made a slow start at Kasugai Country Club East Course in Aichi.

Daniil Sokolov was the best-placed Qatari after the opening round of the men’s individual stroke play, carding a two-over 72. Saleh Al Kaabi and Ali Shahrani both shot six-over 76.

Taiwan’s Wei-hsuan Wang and Japan’s Kazuki Higa shared the lead on five-under 65.

In the team event, the Qatari trio were 16th on a combined eight-over 148, while Japan led with nine-under 131.
