DOHA: The GCC secretariat is likely to announce a time frame for member countries to discuss and finalise a unified building code.
The GCC states have agreed in principle to have a code but have not been able to have it in place.
A code is a set of rules that specify minimum standards for building and construction projects in the GCC states.
The undersecretaries from housing ministries of the GCC states met here yesterday ahead of housing ministers’ meeting scheduled for today. They discussed the code project. It is understood that the code primarily aims to protect the safety of building occupants and support sustainable development. It will also ensure highest quality of building construction and that buildings have reduced energy use and preserve Islamic and Arab heritage.
Qatar chaired the meeting that discussed other topics, including rules of housing information and GCC award in housing, reports QNA.
Ahmed Nasr Al Nasser, Assistant Undersecretary for Social Affairs at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs chaired the meeting. He stressed the importance of sharing experiences of GCC countries to overcome difficulties and address obstacles facing the housing sector.
Talking about Qatar, Nasser Mehanna Al Ramal, Director of Housing at the ministry, told reporters on the sidelines that since a new housing law was enforced here some five years ago, 17,000 applications have been received for housing (from nationals). He said plans are afoot to ensure citizens could soon apply online. The Peninsula
