New York: The Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations organised an event on the sidelines of the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2024) titled “Global Security Lessons from FIFA World Cup 2022: Insights and Applications for International Peacekeeping.” The event took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
In her opening speech, Permanent Representative of the Qatar to the United Nations H E Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani underlined the successful organisation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, emphasizing that ensuring the safety and security of participants and fans was among the top priorities of the event organisers.
She highlighted several programmes and initiatives supported by Qatar in this regard, including Qatar’s support for the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism’s “Global Programme on the Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism.”
She also highlighted Doha’s hosting of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), an independent organization that addresses the most prominent challenges and issues facing the world of sport, as well as to protect it from emerging threats.
The event was attended by several government representatives participating in the UN Chiefs of Police Summit 2024. It provided a valuable opportunity to learn about Qatar’s experience in securing one of the world’s largest and most important sporting events and to discuss ways to advance cooperation with security institutions and governments through the exchange of experiences and best practices.
