Doha: Community action and global citizenship activities are core principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum which is demonstrated at ISL Qatar by its ever-growing charitable activities.
In the the past academic year, the school’s weekly ‘Wednesday Lunch Box’ programme distributed over 12,000 healthy meals to construction workers on a multitude of small building sites near the school. In addition, over 300 students organised bi-weekly beach clean-up activities which led to tens of kilometres of stretches being cleaned throughout the year. Other civic-minded activities included volunteering for events in school and for other communities and organisations around Qatar including animal shelter initiatives, Save the Dream, Maktaba, the Youth Company, and Rota, to mention some, and close to QR60,000 raised for various international charity funds. According to Dr Pilar Fernandez, Head of Global Citizenship Community Action, secondary students have consistently surpassed all previous years’ records this academic year and MYP students lent a hand or came up with their own action activities.
