DOHA: Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has opened applications for its third annual ‘Gateway to College’ summer programme.
Aimed at preparing young Qatari students for university, the intensive one-week programme engages students entering grades eight and nine in activities to build skills needed during their academic years.
Participants from private and Independent schools will be instructed to work collaboratively and think innovatively as they explore course material.
In partnership with Qatar Science and Technology Park, the workshops run from August 30 to September 3 at HBKU Student Centre to explore team work; entrepreneurship; and business planning.
Students will be confronted with business challenges and with guidance from instructors, be responsible for finding and assessing solutions. Teachers include Education City students, alumni and staff from HBKU and partner universities.
Mana Al Ansari from HBKU Student Recruitment said: “This is a unique experience to help students understand the concept of entrepreneurship and business planning from an early age. Last year, the programme received about 100 applications and admitted 44 students. Students learn academic skills and gain confidence in public speaking and debate.”
To guide and prepare Qatari youth for study at HBKU and the branch campuses within Education City, the programme is one of many of HBKU Student Recruitment to support students, families and school administrators. By introducing younger students to higher education at an early stage, the department works to build ambition among Qatari youth and inform the public about undergraduate and graduate programmes within Education City.
Online registration is open and students are invited to visit www.hbku.edu.qa/sp2015 to apply, with early applications given priority due to limited space. Deadline is August 1 and interviews will from August 2 to 6. The Peninsula
