Doha, Qatar: Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has released a new academic study examining social inclusion for persons with disabilities through the lens of Islamic jurisprudence, underscoring the country’s commitment to empowering people with disabilities and integrating them into all aspects of society.
Published by the Ministry’s Department of Islamic Research and Studies, the book, “Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities: A Jurisprudential and Maqasid-Based Study in Transactions and Personal Status Laws,” was authored by Dr. Amal Mohammed Dhafer Al-Arjani. The study explores the extent to which Islamic legal rulings related to disability inclusion align with the higher objectives of Sharia and its broader humanitarian principles.
According to the study, Qatar has demonstrated significant attention to the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities through constitutional, legal and institutional frameworks. It also highlights Qatar’s accession to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, noting that many of the convention’s principles are consistent with the foundations and objectives of Islamic law.
Sheikh Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani, Director of the Department of Islamic Research and Studies, said the publication forms part of the department’s efforts to address contemporary issues in light of Sharia objectives and to demonstrate Islam’s role in promoting justice, protecting human dignity and safeguarding the rights of all segments of society.
He stressed that Islamic teachings have historically placed considerable emphasis on protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, encouraging their integration into society and enabling them to contribute meaningfully to community life.
