DOHA: The GCC states will continue to support the political process in Yemen and work with the key actors of the international community and other concerned parties to enhance the spirit of national consensus among all Yemeni factions and parties.
The Foreign Ministers of the GCC states met yesterday at Riyadh Airbase. This was a preparatory meeting for the 15th Consultative Meeting of the GCC leaders to be held in Riyadh on May 5, QNA reports.
Qatar’s Foreign Minister
H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah, who chaired the Riyadh meet, said Decisive Storm came as a critical necessity to restore the legitimacy in Yemen and help the Yemeni people to stop the bloodshed and prevent Yemen sliding towards discord and chaos. He lauded the military achievements which contributed to beginning of “Operation Renewal of Hope”.
Al Attiyah said the GCC will continue supporting the political process in Yemen, and work with the key actors of the international community and other concerned parties to enhance the “spirit of national consensus among all Yemeni parties, in addition to backing the legitimate leadership that seeks to realise the aspirations of the people”.
Ministers also rejected holding on neutral ground talks between rival political forces in Yemen. They insisted that the talks be held in Saudi Arabia. The talks would be attended by “all Yemeni parties and components supporting legitimacy as well as Yemen’s security and stability,” said GCC Secretary General Abdullatif Al Zayani.
On Iran nuclear programme, he said that the long-awaited final agreement between the world powers and Tehran, expected in June, must address concerns of all countries in the region. He said GCC countries welcomed the recent framework agreement between the two negotiating sides, in line with the relevant international accords, acknowledging a country’s right to use nuclear power for civilian purposes.
In this respect, Al Attiyah reaffirmed the GCC stance rejecting the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, which is to be announced a nuclear-free zone.
On Syria, Al Attiyah urged the international community to seriously seek a political solution that could help realise the expectations of the Syrian people in freedom security and stability.
He called on the world community to assume its responsibilities and take the necessary measures to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine in accordance with the international legitimacy resolutions, so that the Palestinian people could have their own independent state with Al Quds as capital.
