Lagos: Nigerian security forces have rescued the sister of the governor of the oil-rich southern state of Bayelsa, two months after she was abducted, police said on Tuesday.

Gunmen in a jeep seized Nancy Dickson, 26, sister of Governor Seriake Dickson, from her shop with a sales assistant in the state capital Yenagoa on December 19.

"The woman has been rescued. She was freed from her abductors on Sunday," state police spokesman Asinim Butswat told AFP. There were no details on the fate of the assistant.

The governor's spokesman Daniel Iworiso-Markson added: "Some of the kidnappers took to their heels while others were apprehended following a tip-off on their hideout.

"The kidnappers were rattled and overwhelmed to forcefully surrender their kidnapped victim following intense pressure mounted by the security agencies to track down the kidnappers."

No ransom was paid, he added.

Kidnapping for ransom has been common in Nigeria, especially in southern states, where foreign oil workers were often seized during unrest by militants wanting a greater share of crude revenue.

Victims are usually released after the payment of a ransom.
