Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has launched a book Environment and Climate Challenges... Reality and Aspirations authored by Dr. Mohammed Saif Al Kuwari, an engineering adviser and environmental expert in the office of Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

The ceremony was held in the conference hall of the cultural zone of the Expo 2023 Doha Horticultural Exhibition, in the presence of officials and academics. The inauguration ceremony also witnessed a panel discussion entitled “The Environment and Climate Challenges in Qatar and the Gulf”.

In his opening speech at the panel discussion, Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari said that the launch of the book comes on the occasion of the Expo 2023 Doha Horticultural Exhibition, and in implementation of its slogan “Green Desert... and a Better Environment.”

He said that the book focuses, throughout its five chapters, on defining the environment from several aspects. “It also provides an accurate scientific explanation of the causes of the phenomenon of global warming and its negative effects on the planet Earth,” said Al Kuwari.

He said that the book presents to society a set of recommendations that contribute to adapting and mitigating the severity of global warming, based on the vision of scientists, researchers and experts specialized in the environment and climate sciences. In his research paper, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Regional Network for Social Responsibility Dr. Ali Al Ibrahim,, stressed the importance of rapid action by all countries of the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

He noted that research has confirmed that the Earth’s temperature will rise by two degrees Celsius, which will lead to waves new severe droughts, devastating floods, wildfires and storms. A planning expert at the Planning and Statistics Authority Dr. Muhammad Al Shayyab, said that climate change is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing humanity, and it also constitutes a unique challenge for the Arab Gulf countries, which live in an arid natural environment and have economic wealth that depends largely on oil and gas.

Assistant Professor at Qatar University Dr. Khadija Murad, stressed that the causes of climate change are due to natural activities, which include changes in solar activity, volcanic eruptions, and human activity, which mainly depends on burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. Also participating in the panel discussion were Director of the Department of Culture and Arts at the Ministry of Culture Maryam Al Hammadi, Executive Director of the Friends of the Environment Centre Eng Farhoud Al Hajri, and Director of the Programs and Education Department at the National Human Rights Committee Hamad Salem Al Hajri.
